Course Description:

Probability provides formal approaches to problems that involve uncertainty. The goal of this course is to enable students to solve problems in a variety of different contexts. We will develop a central set of concepts (including the notion of a random variable), and we will practice interpreting and solving problems with these concepts at hand. Calculus and combinatorics will be part of the process.

Schedule:

Our class meets MWF 11:10am-12:00pm in 221 Dennison. My office hours are Monday 12-1pm and Friday 9-11am (in 3827 East Hall).

Textbook:

The textbook for the course is A First Course in Probability by Sheldon Ross (7th edition). Please bring the textbook and a calculator to class every day.

Homework:

Regular homework assignments determine part of the grade in this class. Homework sets will usually be due at the start of class on Mondays. (I don't accept late homework.) Everyone will have their lowest homework grade dropped at the end of the semester.
